uncharTED: Sui Zhen

Print
Sui Zhen is a young singer / songwriter / composer who has been performing both solo and with her full live band since 2003, supporting the likes of Coco Rosie (USA), Kimya Dawson (USA), The Brunettes (NZ, SubPop), and Malcolm Middleton (of Arab Strap, USA).

ClubAntix had the pleasure of putting her in the corner for the hard hitting facts...

If you were a piece of string, what colour would you be and why?
Red, because I could always be found.

What is your most outrageous clothing / performance item?
A dress made entirely of paper, it doesn't withstand bad weather so is pretty risky.

You cannot perform without...
Scotch.

What is your mobile phone's current ringtone?
The Stylers – For You

Track you'd love to remix?
The theme song to Round The Twist!

Track you never want to hear again and why?
Theme song to The Nanny, cos it's so damn catchy and I still know all the words though I never watched it.

John Farnham - national treasure or scourge of humanity?
Treasure.

Which artist/band in history would you want to support?
Bruce Springsteen, to learn some of those stadium anthem moves.

Beatles or Stones?
Beatles for Ringo and John

Name 5 people, dead or alive you'd put front row centre at a gig?
Yoko Ono, Karen Dalton, Arthur Russell, Neil Young and Charlie Kaufman so he could keep a record.

What's your favourite plugin and why?
Is this a nerd question? Isync for admin purposes and Flin for my Monome sounds.

How long have you been at this?
Sui Zhen has existed since the early naughties, 02-03

Have you ever played in Albury?
No. But I have eaten some fine fast food there.

Best and worst thing to happen while playing?
Forgetting the lyrics is pretty frustrating, or forgetting to tune a string when playing in open tunings. Best thing is when your voice flows smoothly like honey and there is synergy between the band, and the audience is with you the whole way through.

What do you think Aussie Music Events are missing?
More people.

Coke or Pepsi?
Coca Cola thanks.
