Winter Sound System: Robbie Nelson

Print

Robbie Nelson hails from the East Antrim town of Larne. With residencies at Circus Circus, Banbridge, Kelly's, Portrush and Charlie Heggartys, Bangor, Robbie Nelson aka Robbie V was instrumental in the development and prominent in the evolution of the Northern Irish club scene and electronic music industry.

Heading back to Australia for the Winter Sound System Tour, Robbie is looking forward to "bringing the sunshine" back down under after being stuck in a damn cold winter back home. He's here also here for "a few bears, champagne, and STEAK!" With a few days to spare in-between playing around the country, plans are to check out the city (Melbourne), a few restaurants, movies and dinner.

While not chilling out with a much needed break, Robbie will be dropping a few surprises on the Australian audiences. Excited with a "new tunes, with more ready; euphoric and uplifting" sounds with a promise to "make a tune just for (you). I have an idea just now...."

He's got a huge following in Australia and across the world laughing, "I don't know about being an inspiration, but it's cool" if he is thought of that way. Given he's had a few interesting gigs, the worst being one where he was carried off stage and needed to be wheeled home after "too many beers!!!" He admitted, "good fun, but cost me 600 Euro!" That might not be want you'd deem something you'd try to copycat.

His love of good times is attributed mostly to him not wanting to grow up, "Peter Pan has my motto!" He will be playing till people don't want to see him any more and until then, loving every minute. "Don't know if I'll still be going in my 50's," so "there's time left. I'll know when I go to a gig and no-one shows up that it'll be time to pack it in."

If pushed (or if music wasn't as successful as it is), Robbie would be off flying around the world and the racetrack. "I'd be in Motor sport," he beamed "I love travelling and the F1 or World Rally Championships." His position in this industry might have a little to do with his love of beer as he admits, he'd "not be the driver, but part of the team as there is not as much pressure."

Knowing what else could have been the plan in his life is probably the biggest tip Robbie could give anyone; "treat it as a hobby and don't give up on Plan B. Get involved in a job you like and DJ'ing as the hobby!!" He sees it everyday that "here in Ireland, kids buy decks all the time and then sell them. It's easy to love the idea, but it's harder than they think."

Hard or not, it's a way of life that Robbie has mastered. In 2009 he continued to push his sound around the globe, playing the official after party of the Singapore F1 Grand Prix and enjoying an exhilarating tour of Australia with Trance Energy. He is on the airwaves presenting Solaris International radio show with Solarstone; receiving over 55,000 weekly downloads in addition to thousands of listeners who tune in via digital radio each and every week. He has remixed artists as diverse as Irish rockers U2 and leading trance exponents Armin van Buuren and Ferry Corsten, released tunes on some of the globe’s leading labels (Xtravaganza, Deepblue Records, Tsunami, ID&T), and produced under aliases Afterburn, Cortez, Green Atlas and A&N Project.

He's back to Oz in 2010 for Winter Sound System. Enjoy.
