Some artists stick to one genre and make it their own, others scribble outside the lines with glee. Throughout their 13 year career, Evil Nine (AKA Tom Beaufoy and Pat Pardy) have obliterated the concept of a genre box and mined the widest possible section of modern music to present a sound that’s equal parts fresh, inspiring and surprising. Indeed, take a peek at the long list of artists who inspire the pair and you’ll spy everyone from Black Sabbath to Devo and Timbaland.
How has 2011 been so far?
I think it could be best described as "up and down" . with the calamity that is our declining economy , gigs have been thinner on the ground and less money is being made by the music that gets put out there so its a bit harder to make a living ! having said that , some of the shows have been awesome , particularly shows in taiwan , budapest and Jordan ( our first time in that country ) . i believe we're on a good tip with the music we're making and happy to get props from people like zombie nation and style of eye , who we love , for our latest single "little prince/roar" on bad life records . also done quite a few remixes , for our pal Broke one and new bad life signings DEMS being those which we are most happy with .
You have been playing for a few years now, how have you seen the industry change?
Well its changed quite a lot actually ! gone are those superstar dj days of old , gone are those days of selling 40,000 of a vinyl single which we did with crooked! i think its a lot harder to make a living off music now , the profit margins are slimmer with all the illegal downloading and that and the internet rules the hype ! those at the top are doing aiiight but the many in the middle are struggling along a bit . oh boo hoo , poor us ! its still fucking awesome and just as fun as ever !
First piece of equipment?
Pat might have a different answer to me for this as he was into electronics way earlier . when i was 12 i had two bits of key equipment , a boogie box , a super cheap 4-track style thing with two tape decks , where you'd play along to one tape and record it onto the other ,then play along to that tape to overdub . only problem was that the quality would degrade a lot on each overdub so you'd end up with a massive layer of hiss over everything but it still sounded MAD GOOD to my tiny ears. my other bit of kit was a Korg ms20 but i didnt fully exploit it and generally just used the white noise as a snare for my cardboard box drum kit .
There are a few interesting track names in your discography - where may you have found such deep and thought provoking names like Cakehole, They Live!, Pearl Shot and Stay up?
Yeah we are super deep and thought provoking ! we're serious about our music but sometimes just want to have a bit of laugh with track names . generally we just like words or phrases that sound nice to our ears , cakehole is a prime example of that . they live is named after the masterful john carpenter film and we also thought it was a lil reference to the fact we'd taken so long to bring out our second album ! Pearl shot comes from the mind of our perverse constant collaborater juice aleem so we cant be blamed for that one and stay up is called stay up cos El-p says " i stayed up all night " in it !
Its been said you're not afraid to push the boundaries of breakbeat music, but what is music to you?
Man thats a thesis question right there ! music is my life , my love and if all else goes to shit then music is still there for me !
How did you come to find yourself within the music industry?
Sheer perserverence and some luck . i was always on the path , played in bands when i was young and when i moved to brighton for art school and couldnt find any good musicians to play with , i took to the decks for my music hit . i was lucky then to meet such a kindred spirit in pat and we were lucky then to connect with adam and get on the marine parade tip . we worked real hard on the tunes but to be honest we hadnt got a big plan , just went with the flow and ended up here !
Was this what you thought you would be doing when you were 5?
No i thought i would be an army man .
What does the family think of all this loud music and fun you seem to be having?
they are the most supportive that a family could be . my dad imposes our music one everyone he meets and my relatives think its fucking funny they got a dj in the family , everytime i see them they say " hows life as a superstar dj " , without fail thats what they say ... everytime . it doesnt get old at all ....
Plans for the rest of '11 and into 12?
Australia and new zealand tour , some december shows with our bad life fam and zombie nation , more remixing and making badd ass tunes . and some secret projecting .....
What do you hope you get for Christmas?
A nice lie down ...
Preferred thing to do when not around music?
watch movies , smoke weed , read books , sunbathe , have mad lovins .
