The Lab Winners: Danimals

Print
Congratulations Danimals. You have been personally picked by Mark Ronson to fly to New York and collaborate with him and some of his very famous friends for Tooheys Extra Dry: The Lab.

How’re you feeling?
We’re incredibly ecstatic beyond belief! It’s completely surreal. Incredibly scary to be honest!

When you entered The Lab, did you think you were in with a chance of winning?
Definitely not! My brother suggested I enter, as he knew I was a huge fan. But I thought it was a complete shot in the dark as there’re a million and one amazing artists and bands emerging from Australia every minute that it gets overwhelming.

What is it about your music that made you stand out to Mark Ronson in your opinion?
I’m not sure exactly, but when I got to meet him he mentioned he liked the harmonies and samples. Additionally, he thought it had a good balance of something unique that works within a pop context, which is something Mark and all the other artists we’re working with are really good at.

Are you looking forward to New York?
New York has been home to an incredible amount of musicians, artists, writers and people I look up to and dreamt of being in company with!

What are you going to pack?
Well, we’re going to take all the musical equipment we can fit on the plane. We should be okay as long as we have a toothbrush.

Which collaborator/s (Santigold, Nick Hodgson of Kaiser Chiefs, Sean Lennon, John Taylor of Duran Duran and members of The Dap-Kings) are you most looking to working with and why?
Of course I don’t want to choose, but Santigold is one of the most amazing vocalist and songwriters I’ve ever heard! Additionally, she’s done some really amazing and unique collaborations with GZA, Pharrell Williams, Julian Casablancas, N.A.S.A. and many others. She’s so incredibly versatile it’s an injustice!

Do you have any idea what to expect from this once in a lifetime experience?
I couldn’t predict what my next bowl of cereal would taste like, never mind writing and recording with Mark Ronson, Santigold, Nick Hodgson,, Sean Lennon, John Taylor, and members of the Dap-Kings in New York City!

What do you hope wining this prize will achieve for you as an artist/band?
Being exposed to new ways of collaborating on music with people we really admire is really rad enough. Going home with extra confidence will give the old love life a bit of a boost! The exposure will be great, but we still have a long way to go before we really crack into the industry.

You’ll also have a camera crew following you around filming your journey, how does this make you feel?
It makes me feel sorry for them to be trying to keep my stumbling and un-photogenic self in frame! Luckily the other band members are fun and good-looking.

Is there anything else you would like to get up to whilst in New York?
Some things I’ve been told to explore by various people are Max Fish, Death By Audio, Parliaments, Red Stripes, Pizza Slices and Goodbye Blue Monday. I’ve google map’d almost every record and synth store in New York.

Is there anything you would like to add?
This is all too much to handle, and I’m forever grateful for this opportunity. I promise to be as polite to people as can be!
