Stereosonic: Aly and Fila

Print
It's early morning and, already enjoying the sun, Fila isn't one to waste time sleeping, "I don't like to be up late," he says, already looking forward to his next trip to Australia for Stereosonic. Hoping for great weather, he just can't wait with a performance set to be a "banging melodic set you'll never forget," laughing, "a must see!"

"I've been thinking about the sets," he admits, "just waiting to find out the set times and how long the sets are. It helps to know; plan the set, to build and do more." and, sounding as though he's grinning from ear to ear, "to be banging from start to end."

This trip will sadly be only one half of the duo act, Aly & Fila. "Aly has a problem in his left ear," he said soberly, "and doctors advised him not to go near loud music.". Just to clarify, it's not quite as dire as the Frankie Wilde situation in the mockumentray, Its All Gone Pete Tong, however his ear does "have huge amounts of damage." The problem caused by "a monitor in Mexico, with no ear plugs his ears got really damaged, the doctors saying 'if you want to continue hearing – no loud music'."

Music for Fila has been a passion since he was a kid, "I always listened to it, listening to the radio and then a started to enjoy parties and then started playing. Music was something that was always really important to me, not being in a shop or office. Until the end of my life I will be doing music - I have to do music."

Fortunately for Fila, with the obvious preference of life away from an office desk and cubicle, his life has been all about the tunes for over three years now, since then achieving ranking in DJ Mags Top 100. "I felt that I was doing good productions and getting some recognition," although never really aware of the impact he was making, "I was working in London and one day got an email from Armada. 'Did you want to play with Armin?'" it said," laughing "I felt like something must be happening at this stage," so his first major set was playing alongside the world-ranked number 1 DJ Armin van Buuren for A State Of Trance 300. He knew then, he was getting somewhere.

Still so incredibly humble and modest, Fila knows it's been a lot of luck and good timing. He's managed to never work a 'real' job in his life, the moment "after graduation (at Uni) I was a professional producer. I was lucky enough to have that." It is a lot of hard work and a constant challenge but, "if you love it, you'll love doing it. You can always achieve it. I'm no better than anyone else, I'm not special, it's just hard work, be focused and hope for a bit of luck. There are lots of acts and producers that don't get the recognition they deserve."

Apparently though, according to Fila, it's not all glory and bright light, "the worse thing is all the waiting!" he laughs, "airports, planes, during transfer – waiting. Never-ending story you know? Every week I'm on 6 or 7 flights." But, he loves every minute of it.

As for loving things Australia style, "I would love to get to the beaches, get a tan, enjoy the summer. I will be spending some time in Melbourne, so I hope the crazy weather is okay."
