Melbourne audiences can feast on a dazzling collection of contemporary and timeless films from Spain and Latin America at La Mirada Film Festival 2010. Australia’s most dynamic niche film festival returns to the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (acmi) from 1 to 11 April 2010, presenting a rich and diverse program of features and documentaries.
Festival Director Rocio Garcia is delighted to announce Oscar-winner Martin Scorsese and Stephen Daldry (The Reader, Billy Elliot), as the 2010 guest curators. The two great auteurs will share their favourite Spanish films at surprise screenings, not revealed until the credits start to roll.
From its inception in 2007, La Mirada has been unlike any other film festival. Legendary Spanish filmmaker and patron of La Mirada, Pedro Almodóvar, co-programmes the festival, selecting five masterpieces for the ‘Almodóvar Presents’, classics section. Each year different international cinema luminaries act as guest curators. Previous curators have included author Paul Auster, director Woody Allen and actor Penelope Cruz.
The unmissable opening night Gala (hurry, this event sells out fast every year!) will feature the Australian premiere of Me Too (Yo Tambien), winner Best Actor and best Actress Awards at San Sebastian, Audience Award at Rotterdam Film Fest., followed by a party La Mirada style at Beer Deluxe featuring the finest quality Spanish food, wines, beers and of course music.
Along with new releases, documentaries, and a student film competition, the 2010 festival will feature a vibrant thematic strand, All About Tango – a selection of films about the Argentinean tango which will be complemented by tango performances and classes. The deliciously indulgent Spanish Cuisine and Film returns with a feast of authentic Spanish dishes and premium Spanish wines, complemented by a special screening about the best restaurant in the world, El Bulli. The program will also include Teaserland, a quirky section consisting of “fake” film trailers made by high-profile directors, such as Isabel Coixet, Jaume Balagueró, J.A. Bayona (The Orphanage) and Jaume Balaguero & Paco Plaza (REC, promoting never-to-be-made films.
La Mirada is officially supported by the Spanish, Argentinean, Australian governments and their respective consulates and embassies, in addition to the Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts in Spain and Argentina (ICAA and INCAA), the Institute of Cervantes, the Mexican Institute of Cinematography, Australian Centre for the Moving Image (acmi), FILMOTECH, the Audiovisual Producers’ Rights Management Association (EGEDA) and the Agency for External International Cooperation for Development (AEICD), ensuring the best films of the current year as well as classics are available for the festival.
