ISOS: Richard Durand

With In Search of Sunrise about to hit the Australian shores, ClubAntix questioned Richard about his intentions.

Without doubt the hottest new trance DJ / producer to emerge from Holland this past couple of years is Richard Durand. Recommended by the mighty Tiësto as his 'Tip For The Top in 2007' in DJ Magazine, Richard responded with a string of stunning productions, including official remixes for Tiësto, culminating in a new entry placing in the DJ Magazine Top 100 DJs poll at the end of 2007.

The Richard Durand sound is trance, techno and tough electro in a unique package that's both dynamic and devastating. Having initially made his mark as a solo producer with big tech trance bombs such as 'Make Me Scream' and 'Slipping Away' on the Terminal 4 label, the huge success of his remixes of Tiësto singles 'Lethal Industry', 'Flight 643' and 'Break My Fall', plus infamous festival favourite reworks of the likes of Prodigy 'Smack My Bitch Up' and Snow Patrol 'Chasing Cars' soon had Richard Durand marked as one of the hottest remixers on the planet with consistent playlist support from the DJing elite Armin van Buuren, Paul van Dyk, Ferry Corsten, Judge Jules and Eddie Halliwell to name but a few.

You've had some huge hits, what is your hope with the latest In Search of Sunrise?
When Tiesto stopped the series it was a great honour to be asked to make the follow-up. So I just hope to produce a fitting next chapter to this amazing series of CDs.

What do your loyal Aussie fans have to hope for through the tour?
Well I'll be playing a longer set than normal, so I'll have more time to throw down the latest tunes and some exclusive reworks.

Being this isn't you first visit, do you have any plans outside of touring while in Australia:
I don’t have that much downtime in between the two long weekends, but when I do I always go out into the city I'm staying in to do a bit of exploring.

You've had up to 4 x CD decks and effects units around while playing - have you ever been distracted?
The four CD decks is just a bit of fun really - it's a way of playing around with the tracks and creating something spontaneous and unique to suit the moment.

Most random or memorable thing to happen while playing?
When you are visiting as many places as I do, you meet some very crazy people! One time somebody was asking me during my set to play a certain track, but this guy was so drunk that he leant over too far and pulled down the whole DJ booth!

If you could play to an audience of any 5 people you chose, who would they be?
Michael Jackson, Queen of England, Barack Obama, Mohammad Ali and Bach the composer.

Why did you get into music?
I was playing the piano already when I was a little boy. When I got older I loved clubbing and so decided to adapt my existing music skills to dance music and studio production.

Where does your inspiration come from?
My inspiration comes from pretty much anything and everything, for example, my travelling, other people, movies, other people’s music...

How long do you think you'll be making music?
I plan for it to be for my whole life!

Other than music, headphones and equipment, what can't you perform without?
The right crowd :)

Where or who would Richard Durand be if he wasn't a DJ / Producing / Superstar?
I think I would have a gym and be an instructor.

Tip for someone just starting out?
Be yourself and don’t do it for the money but for the love of music.

Hardest thing about being you?
Doing a lot of interviews? Haha!

Best thing about being you?
Having a very free and exciting life :)

When did you last have a holiday?
Last year I went to Langkawi - some beautiful islands just off the coast of Malaysia.

Coming from the Netherlands, what's really the best Cheese?
Cheese? I don’t know anything about cheese, haha!

What languages can you speak?
Dutch and English gets me by in most places I visit. Spending forever on planes, you wish they had:
Internet and a bed to sleep in even in economy class!
