A funky collection of some of the biggest tunes over the years. From more recent superstars to old school anthems, Gabriel & Dresden: Mixed for Feet Vol 1 mixes the flavours of trance, with techno, electro and dance to create a sweltering mix-a-thon of bass, beats and sizzling vocals.
Starting innocently enough, CD 1 of the double disc set is rather polite. Gabriel & Dresdens Ascending through to Andain Beautiful Things set you up for a sweet embrace of musical mastery. The tunes blend into each other like melted chocolate until slowly, it turns up the heat, exploding into some deliciously refined, burning techno.
The best part about Disc 1 is the blending of genre, done seamlessly by the duo Josh Gabriel and Dave Dresden from San Francisco who have been mixing together on and off for over 10 years. The flavours of House, electronica with techno and trance are brilliant and highlight their diversity and intelligence when putting together a compilation.
But then you switch over to Disc 2.
This time, you're in for a more gritty, facemelting affair. Building engaging electronic sounds and huge synth cannons from Gabriel & Dresden themselves as well as Arty, Fedde Le Grande with a little Funkagenda and Adam K thrown in for good measure. Disc 2 also highlights the diversity of sound of your more commonplace 'trance' producers, with filthy mixes of Rebound (Arty & Mat Zo), Adain and Dada Life.
The double disc collection by the boys is solid, well mixed, diverse and interesting. Although the artists and tracks featured are a little repetitive, this serves many purposes – firstly, the diversity of the artists themselves, the difference a little Gabriel & Dresden remixing can do and also highlights the timeless nature of tracks that still cause uproar when dropped onto any dance floor on the planet.
This CD is a recommended purpose for anyone who likes a little spice in their music, a flavour that's something filthy and tough and makes a statement. It is loud, banging and passionate. It doesn't stick to a genre, an equation or your run-of-the-mill compilation. It breaks all the rules. These CDs take you on a journey and you need to strap yourself in.
In light of this, it is probably not good for dinner with your parents...
