My watch will pretty much be a cocktail mix of everything I am – LOUD, COLOURFUL, BOLD, IN-YO-FACE and EXTREMELY CUTE!
2.Where did you find inspiration for your design?
I’m never one to shy away from standing out in a crowd. I like to think I march to my own beat and not follow trends. Even though bright colours seem to be a thing of the past, when I first rocked G-SHOCK watches back in the day I was drawn to their brash colours and chunky silhouettes. I’m a sucker for anything from the ‘90s with a sprinkling of Fluoro to represent my old school b-girl pseudonym FLUORO BREAKER!
3.How fashionable is a watch? How necessary are they as an accessory?
It’s the only piece of jewellery I wear. I feel naked without my G-SHOCK. It’s an honour for me to design my own Shock as it’s the only brand of watch I have ever worn and have acquired a nice collection of styles over a 15-year period. My watches always catch peeps attention! Plus, like Flavor Flav says, I know ‘what time it is!” BOOM!
4.If you could put your fashion style in a ‘genre’ what would it be? (E.g. Indie / Vintage / Chic)
My watch is purely street. Just like me!
5.Who are your fashion icons?
Anyone that is pure flashy and on the ‘90s tip! I heart Jeremy Scott, TLC, Will Smith circa Fresh Prince, Kid and Play, Ms Fitz (SYD), Queen Latifah (circa House Party), Black Bart bootleg, Fido Dido, ‘90s Starter, snap backs, 90210, Fruition, Dr Romanelli, Kanye West – I could go on for days!
6.What are your favourite places to find good threads?
Definitely on eBay – I rarely walk into a store anymore and buy anything. I need authentic ‘90s tees, jackets, hats and kicks, so the only place to do this is on the net. Thank god for the world wide web. The Fruition online store is AMAZEMONT!
7.You’ve played exclusive parties before, what have been the best ones?
So so many. I’ve played all the major festivals down under, supported and toured with Dizzee Rascal, Snoop Dogg, De La Soul, Spinderella, Vanilla Ice (YES!!!), Lady Gaga, Kid Cudi, Cool Kids, Ghostface Killah, A-Trak, Girl Talk, Spank Rock, Felix Da Housecat, Chromeo, Tittsworth, Scottie B. I also run a lot of parties in Melbourne which pull massive crowds week after week, which I’m so proud of – Hoochie Mama and N.O.T.O.R.I.O.U.S. and I’m also part of the Favela Rock DJs.
8.What makes a party a success?
I’m all about playing songs that evoke emotions in a crowd. My ish will have you saying “Oh my god, I remember this song!!!!” I’m known to play a lot of cheesy bangers to get the crowd amped, and I’m not too cool for school! If you can sing to it and get loose then you’ll probably hear it. I play for the ladies, which in turn the fellas are very appreciative for, so everyone wins!
9.Which city in the world has the best parties?
Well I’ve been all over the world, and there’s nothing like rocking a party full of familiar faces in your hometown! I love making my friends smile, they are my harshest critics and biggest fans all at once!
10.What type of tracks should we expect M.A.F.I.A. to play at G-SHOCK: Shock The World Tour?
You’ll hear a lot of party jams that will make you sweat and get loose on the dance floor, thrown in with a lot of on the spot remixes and tunes you would never have thought would mix well together, creating a cocktail of crazy bangers. Frank Sinatra mixed with Jay Z mixed with Michael Jackson – there’s a teaser for ya!
11.Who are your favourite DJs and why?
I love DJs that are incredibly passionate about their music that put their whole body into each set. I wanna see you sweat! There’s nothing worse than standing around while a DJ pulls out scratch tricks and goes hell for leather on technicality, without bringing any soul to the party. I love DJs that get equally loose as their audience – hence the reason I love Hoops DJs, Dexter, A-Trak, Girl Talk, Dj Eleven, Catchdubs, Zimmie, Miss Beats, Hans DC, Young Steezy, my Favela crew... I could of course go on forever!
12.What’s next for M.A.F.I.A. after G-SHOCK?
I run weekly nights in Melbourne and resident every Thurs/Fri/Sat/Sun at various clubs around Melbourne so my plate is always full! From Alia, to Miss Libertines, Robarta, to Red Violin and beyond. I’ll be supporting US beat boxer Rahzel, I’ll be playing to over 10,000 people at the Meredith Festival and again at Summerdayze. I’ll be hitting the Big Apple of NYC next year to finally take over the US market. Watch out Samantha Ronson!
M.A.F.I.A. will perform live DJ sets along with DJ Dexter and HOOPS DJs. for the G-SHOCK: Shock The World Tour in Sydney on 19th November at CarriageWorks. Visit www.g-shocksydney.com for more information.
