G-Shock: Shock the World Tour - Jonathan Pease

Print
1.You’ve been chosen to design a limited edition G-SHOCK watch in association with the G-SHOCK: Shock The World Tour Sydney event, what sort of design should we expect? Any hints?
I like to create things that clash and create conversations. The G-SHOCK is built for brut strength so I’ve juxtaposed that toughness with a soft ‘man-bag aesthetic’. It’s not for the sexually undecided.

2.What was the inspiration behind your design?
Iconic and overly expensive high fashion.

3.You’re a fashion stylist, opinion leader, art director, event host and worked in ad agencies… if someone didn’t know who you were, how would you describe yourself and what you do for a living?

I sell ideas for a living so I guess you could say I’m an ‘Ideas Man’. I work within the fashion industry clearly but I also work across most things entertainment and marketing. I actually own and run an ideas company here in Sydney called Tongue.

4.Who/What are your fashion influences and icons?
In the fashion space I love Karl Lagerfeld, Alexander McQueen, and Raff Simons. I’m a massive fan of the late John Hughes; I’ve seen all his films (Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off etc…) countless times and strive to tell those kinds of stories through my work.

5.Do you have any fashion dos & don’ts that you’d like to share? (i.e. Do not wear denim on denim, etc)
Don’t play by the rules and mimic what’s in style this season… it’ll be wrong in three months time anyway. I believe you’ve got to pick a style that reflects who you are and then adapt it to work within seasonal trends. Needless to say, some things are just never ok: Ralph Lauren Polo T’s with a popped collar on guys / Pin stripe suits complete with trousers on girls.

6.If you could collaborate with any designer in the world past or present, who would it be and why?
Karl Lagerfeld for sure – Visionary, eccentric, and it’s never about the money.

7.How would you describe the Australian Fashion industry compared to say US or UK? Do we follow our overseas friends or does Australia have more to offer?
I think we do tend to follow overseas markets but it’s changing. We have some amazing Australian fashion talent and I’m feeling a cultural shift happening. There’s no reason why we can’t lead the world in some areas of fashion… swimwear should be a lay up!

8.What are your favourite fashion brands?
Helmut Lang, Dior, Raf by Raf Simons, Chanel, Evisu, Puma, and Nike.

9.What is your most loved item of clothing? Where did you get it? Why do you love it so much?
Probably my hand sewn white Gucci dinner jacket that I bought in Italy. It’s ultra chic and never fails to make me feel European.

10.What is next for you after G-SHOCK?
Shooting loads more TV stuff in 2010 and continuing to grow the Tongue business. I’ve also got a great holiday booked in – Vegas for NYE and then 2 weeks skiing in Vail… can’t wait!

Jonathan Pease will host the G-SHOCK: Shock The World Tour in Sydney on 19th November at CarriageWorks. The events will feature live DJ sets from DJ Dexter, HOOPS DJs and M.A.F.I.A. Visit www.g-shocksydney.com for more information.
