The man is none other than Ferry Corsten and Glen Canning was privileged to shoot the breeze about the past, present and of course his impending Australian sojourn with the unbelievably enormous Stereosonic tour this November.
Corsten thrives on the seemingly infinite expanse of possibilities that he can use in his productions and if one listens to his impressive back catalogue of over 300 tracks you will hear an eclectic fusion of house, trance and electro. This diversity is what has kept Corsten at the top of the game for over a decade yet is also the source of his critics.Ferry Corsten1 199x300 Ferry Corsten Strap Yourself In One of Corsten’s recent releases “Check It Out” was met with storm of controversy simply because it wasn’t trance.
“Now I’m very open to criticism and its fine,” Corsten begins, “be critical but base it on something, if you just throw it out there with no reasoning then I’m like ‘well then don’t say anything cause you make no sense’. “Check it Out” is just a dance floor record, it’s just a party track, it’s not I’m going to make the most emotional track in history; it’s just a party record, nothing more and nothing less. “Punk” wasn’t a trance track, “Rock Your Body Rock” wasn’t a trance track, “Fire” was a house track in the beginning and these records were all my biggest records so before you even start going all bitchy about it on Facebook or YouTube then do you research first and we’ll talk again.”
“These people wish I made the same trance that I made in 1999 and I’m like well it’s not 1999 anymore and it’s something a lot more artists should think about, not to be told by the fans what to produce, it should be the other way around.”
Corsten’s sentiments resonate loudly throughout the music scene as it is undisputable that if artists were still making the same music they were a decade ago they simply wouldn’t last that long. That’s what makes it such an exciting journey and this evolution of music is Corsten’s playground.
“I stay on the lookout for new developments and tap into that but not too much like right now there is this great fusion where house is meeting trance and the other way around so it’s still melodic or emotional sometimes with the hands in the air moments but it’s getting groovy, it’s getting 128bpm – it’s time to dance, its sexier and the girls are loving it as well!”
“I keep my eyes open to what’s going on without stepping away from trance too much I tap into that new thing and I try to soak up a lot of the new developments and I use it in my DJ sets, in my own music but always with where I’ve come from in the back of my head.”
Although still in the almost top secret stage of development, Corsten was still willing to reveal some tantalising information about his upcoming artist album.
“Hoping to have finished the album in the next couple of months and we’re kind of looking at the beginning of next year so January/ February for release and I’d say I’m 70-80% done right now and I’m very happy with what’s coming up.”
And the question that’s burning into the minds of many is what direction will Corsten take on his latest leg of his musical journey?
“Well there’s definitely some trance tracks on there but there’s also some of the new style I mentioned before with the big hands in the air moments but on a slower pace, obviously the track I did with Armin is on there “Brute”, I did a track with Aruna which is going to be there and in my opinion a very uplifting track vocal wise and obviously a couple more collaborations but I’m going to spill the beans about them a little while from now ha ha ha”
As Stereosonic looms closer and closer in the distance, Corsten will once again don his Festival Ferry hat and once again lay waste to the dance floors across the country but there’s no secret ingredients to Corsten’s electrifying sets.
“Its gonna be a big festival so that means a big festival set, full of energy, I’ll definitely play a lot of the tracks on the album cause it’s going to be a bit of a preview tour for me as well, obviously some of the big Corsten classics and lots of fun!”
Corsten closes out the interview with a tantalising reassuring yet non-committal answer when the possibility of a back to back set with Armin was raised.
“Nothing has been planned but you never know cause on tour a lot of strange things happen so for all we know we’ll just go all out and go crazy ha ha ha.”
