Since he was in Australia the last, “I’ve been touring non-stop. Last 2 months have been in Europe, so I’m bit more on ball. Maybe I need to learn from Charlie Sheen, he’s epic, try to learn some of his quotes,” he laughs. The energy Simon has that Charlie seems to omit is what might be missing, “I’m doing lots of gym and but having computer issues, which I’m tweeting and you know, with a few gigs in the middle,” he laughs, “just lucky the gigs have been good!”
2011 hasn’t slowed nor looks to, “since Christmas, it’s been good to be in Europe and have a few weekends off, to just knuckle down, get back at the gym, eat properly and have a moment to stop. Fitness and eating when touring,” he says are the first things to go during touring, “loose that and it makes you more tired.”
Just like this weekend and most weekends. “This weekend,” like many has “the long haul flights,” where in-between it’s mainly “trying to get as fit as I can, then I’m off to Australia. I’m so excited to get back. Before it I’m going to Seattle, then LA for Beyond Wonderland playing some of the best events for me. I’ve played 2 this year, so excited to go back, LA is amazing. Next couple of months are so exciting.”
Australian tours have been a career highlight for Simon, “Trance Energy was hectic but I was with so many people I knew, we were keeping each other going. Every day a new place with new things. This time I have a few days in the middle to relax. To constantly go from place to place it gets very tiring.” Coming back, it’s been 2 years now, my fitness has level have totally dropped!” he says, “I’m trying to request that I get some time off in Brisbane or Melbourne to spend some time in a different city, just not sure on the organisers,” he laughs.
The last Australian tour was hard, but fun “I didn’t sleep the last time, maybe an hour? I had rubbish sleeping tablets in London, then jet lag, then straight to the gig. I’m still not sure how I did it. I loved it, it was just annoying Melbourne was the first gig. I wish it was the last, I just love Melbourne.” The previous tour with Airport saw him play with Sied Van Riel, “watching Sied playing with no headphones for 15 minutes,” was amazing he says (Holland was playing in the Semi Finals of the World Cup, winning during Sied’s set), “if Ireland was in the world cup I would be doing the same,” thinking ,”you need to have something else going on” on life. A life for Simon that is busy and almost forgetful, like St Patricks day, “have I forgot it?” he laughs, “I’m not even sure when it is! Being in England I don’t celebrate it, if in Ireland it was the great night to go out with your friends.” At the moment, he’s revelling in the World Cup Cricket, “it’s not our forte, but it was a great performance. For sure for sure,” he says proudly. His job has taken him far from home and as he talks of it, his accent changes almost poetically, “I haven’t seen my mum for like a year which is kind of concerning. I don’t go back too much, I was in in Set last year, but it was in and out. Which,” sadly “tends to be the drill these days; off somewhere else the next day, it’s a shame. My whole life is in England,” sighing, its “hard enough being home then trying to go there. I’d be back, surely. Go back and live in the country, for sure. I’d love to say I had 10 years in me, just hit it hard. Try to invest and be sensible,” then think about slowing down. “I’ll stay in music but do something else, that keeps me home a little more. I just going to try to grow and do as much as I can now, DJing is such a short lived career.” Maybe he says the trick will be to “do what Oakenfold does! A film score,” or something, he jokes, “I can still tour and stuff as you get bigger and older, but you can think, rather than play every weeks, just play 2 bigger gigs a month. That,” he beams, “would be the aim for me, but there is a long way to go for that,” so for now, “its focus hard and work hard.”
All this work will again bring Simon Patterson to Australia, and what can we hope to see? “Shirts off, standing on the decks. That’s what you can expect,” he bursts into laughing. Conceding, “that’s the usual, Simon Patterson stuff (namely wicked tunes). I’m hoping for good weather, and am just excited to come back. It’s gone so fast. A quarter of the year down already…”
“And now Christmas is just around the corner.”
