Creamfields 2011 - Mumbai Science

Print
Although used to a long night, Jonas Kiesekoms of Mumbai Science “still needs some sleep.” Waking up just to speak with us, the boys are already busy with some last minute pre-tour chores before jumping on the plane. “We’re really ready to come to Australia,” Jonas admits, “it’s one of the main events of our summer; we’re really looking forward to it.” The trip for the Creamfields Tour kicking off this April will be the first time down under for the guys and already presents high expectations. “We have a few friends that have been there saying ’it’s the best country ever’! The people just go crazy and love the party. So our expectations are really high,” laughing “I’m pretty sure it’ll be OK.”

The boys Jonas Kiesekoms and Maarten Elen make up Mumbai Science. The guys have a musical relationship that is something to be envied, giving us a little insight to how they work. “The secret about working with Maartin?” he jokes, “well, he’s a perfect guy! It’s really hard for me though as I always have to compete, but he’s perfect!” Laughing, “he’s joy a travel with,” on the many long haul flights, “we have tricks to entertain each other like playing ‘animal snake’ where we say one animal and then the other person says an animal with first letter beginning with the last letter of the first animal,” he explains. “So if anyone wants to challenge us in Australia,” be warned, “you won’t win. We are the masters.”

This masterful duo will be bringing more than just animal knowledge to Creamfields. To start with, the two have over 10 years of creative experimentation in electronic music and at only 24, these boys have a lot ahead of them. Recently, they’ve been remixing for the likes of Andy George & Jaymo and Mixhell with original hits Ancova and Gold still heard in clubs the world over.

In knowing of these juicy tracks, one has to ask: what are the tunes planned for the tour. “This is pretty exclusive,” he laughs “I don’t think I’m allowed to say this.” Collecting his thoughts, “I’m so confused because I’m not awake! We have a new EP coming out, ready for the summer. Australia will be the testing ground! Over the next two weeks we’re hoping to master it and Australia will be the first ever to hear it on stage. We’re hoping for it to go down well.” This tune super-secret track to be released in due course Jonas feels “will work, but you never know, it’s always a surprise,” so lucky Australia; we get the privilege of some unheard Mumbai Science magic.

When not on the stages of Creamfields, and ‘bringing it’ to Australia, they’ve been doing their homework. “We talked to a few other guys touring and hoping to see all the hot spots in Australia.” With their main plans set in “seeing a lot of the Creamfields grounds,” they hope to do the ‘touristy’ stuff too. “We are only there for two weeks so won’t do the whole country,” he sighs, so they are keeping an open mind and both are “up for anything.”

That said it is anything except everything in Australia that kills you. “We heard that Koalas are cursed and put a spell on you when you hold them!” he admits, “we’ve also been told that we should to try to surf. One friend (of theirs) went on a surfing trip, came home and after that he just wanted to never work again and just surf in Australia.” So with this plan pencilled into the agenda, “we suck at surfing but want to catch some waves to try out our moves,” he laughs. They will be taking their tips from what they’ve “seen on video, so I’m not if we’ll survive but we’ll try anyway.” Proudly proclaiming he’d “love to wipe out,” but probably mentioning to family that “we’ll be careful.” The care for their welfare will be taken further when playing with our wetter wildlife, like Sharks. “We don’t have sharks in Belgium,” he says, “well, we don’t have waves either so no-one goes surfing! If you go here, people laugh at you cause you’re just paddling about.”

“I’m going to be having nightmares,” he jokes due to hearing nothing but stories of human eating sharks and loud mate-calling drop bears, “maybe we could sample them? Make a track from it,” he said. (Please note that in trying to convince this poor foreigner that drop bears are actually soft, gentle, chilled out and cuddly; recommendations were made to try and meet one at the Zoo. “They sound like us,” he laughed, “soft gentle and slow. So I’m sure we can try that.”)

Away from the chance to tour with their music, one thing Mumbai Science is truly excited about is the Australian people. “We hear you are all really hospitable, we’ve met a few,” so from this and knowing a little of our humour and laid back attitude, we are apparently perfect for this travelling duo. “We like hugs and we like beers. So we’ll love it!” In part of the deal as thanks for hosting them, “we’ll bring the good weather, it’s known for the good weather all year here, we have the sunshine!” Laughing hysterically, “you know yesterday the first time in as long as I can remember there was sun, there is always no sun or just rain.” In hearing that our coast is covered in tan lines, “we’ll try to bring the weather, maybe we’ll do some sun dances, make sure the sun is shining – if everyone joins us dancing really I’m sure the party gods will thank us will good weather.”

Once they’ve drunk their beer and nursed any potential sunburn, Mumbai Science has a huge 2011. “We’re doing some festivals in Belgium. As that’s where our passion started in festivals, and got us really into electronic dance music,” this is something that touches them personally as well as musically. “I think we have a trip to the US, we’ll be touring there for the second time, we met some amazing people there and we can’t wait to see them all them again.” Once the busy mid-months of the year have past, “after summer I think we’re going to take some time and come up with some new sounds. We’ve been releasing really hard now, like we are on our 40th EP. So we want to take some time in the studio and focus on new sounds, a new vibe and try to replenish our minds and souls,” he said, “maybe bring out an amazing 50th EP.”

In the meantime for April 2011, “we love that someone loves us enough,” for being asked to tour with Creamfields in Australia. Being able to play for people “who believe in us enough,” is what makes every moment all the more amazing for Mumbai Science.
