With over 40 amazing acts from home and around the world already on board its time to complete the picture of what‟s in store for the 2011 series of BIG DAY OUT festivals. For the record, 2011 was by far our biggest ever first announcement.
The Gold Coast, Melbourne and Sydney events sold out in minutes and a second Sydney BIG DAY OUT has been added on Thursday, 27 January to cope with overwhelming ticket demand. BIG DAY OUT 2011 is ever evolving and to follow are the new additions musically and visually to complete the BIG DAY OUT 2011 line-up.
As you would know BIG DAY OUT is not just about international acts. We truly believe in supporting local musicians, DJs and artists. Each show has many additional local acts resulting in seven different BIG DAY OUT line-ups.
It's also not just about bands. From the always surreal LILYWORLD to the even more surreal SILENT DISCO or the visual and sensory spectacles created by this year‟s MUCKAMUCKS artists. There are always more worlds within worlds to explore.
Of course the full picture is not complete without playing times so we are making them available on our website from Friday, 3 December. Planning your day does take some time. So let‟s get started.
National musical additions:
SIA
Pop sensation SIA has rounded out an outstanding 2010 which saw the release of her highly-anticipated fifth album, We Are Born. All across We Are Born, SIA showcases her rich and sometimes slightly distressed soprano. Boasting constant rotation of hit singles, Clap Your Hands, Bring Night and You’ve Changed, the album was honoured with three ARIA Awards this year – including Best Pop Release and Best Independent Album from an epic seven nominations! Such events truly confirm what was inevitable: Australians have fallen in love with the homegrown songstress, bringing colour and flair with her SIA heads for BIG DAY OUT 2011 (ALL SHOWS) THE VINES
One of Australia‟s most talented and infamous bands, THE VINES had a meteoric rise from a suburban Sydney garage to the cover of NME in UK and Rolling Stone in the USA. This is a band with enough genius songwriting to fill four albums. THE VINES feel their story is only half written. Wanting to make it up to their loyal fans for a cancelled Big Day Out slot in 2009 the band are all set for BIG DAY OUT 2011. Marking the return of THE VINES is a brand new single Gimmie Love on your radio soon with a new album to follow in the New Year. And what better way to welcome back THE VINES than to have them kick start the main arena. THE VINES will be proving their rock attitude credentials when they set the bar for the day as the first act of the day. We salute you. (ALL AUSTRALIAN SHOWS)
THE GREENHORNES
Hailing from Cincinnati, Ohio the trio of Craig Fox, Patrick Keeler and Jack Lawrence known as THE GREENHORNES have been churning out the highest quality rock n roll for well over a decade. Their sound is pure, straight up Nuggets inspired rock and roll. These guys have been weened on a diet almost solely consisting of the finest British R&B and rock innovators. This isn't a hobby or something they are doing between projects - it's their life. Good, old-fashioned rock 'n' roll, plain and simple. After a five year hiatus, THE GREENHORNES are back with their new album, aptly titled "★★★★" and are on the way to our fine shores to shake up BIG DAY OUT 2011. (ALL SHOWS)
WASHINGTON
She weighs half as much as her keyboard but she could punch out your Dad. Yes, she is a female singer songwriter…but she‟s not shy and retreating or cute. Her voice will stop you in your tracks. It‟s Megan WASHINGTON, along with that unmistakable voice that soars, then falters, then soars again and it is full of sorrow even when it is full of joy (soft, broken, soaring, sorrow, spitting, sneering, smiling etc etc). And she can dance real good. Roll up, roll up: ARIA Award winning WASHINGTON plays BIG DAY OUT 2011. (ALL AUSTRALIAN SHOWS)
MATT & KIM
MATT & KIM never let a silly thing like not knowing how to play their chosen instruments stop them from forming a band. Fast forward six years, the Brooklyn duo are on their way to BIG DAY OUT 2011. Rest assured though, the two piece have well and truly since mastered their tools in all their electro-indie-poppy goodness. The quirky couple recently released their third full length album, Sidewalks and the first single off the album, Cameras, is already making waves in the US. Come and witness MATT & KIM at BIG DAY OUT 2011, joining in optional but preferred. (ALL AUSTRALIAN SHOWS)
BLACK MILK
In only a few years, producer/emcee BLACK MILK has quickly developed into one of the few hip hop artists who both carries an accomplished resume and is followed with widely-held optimism about what he can bring as one of the leaders of the modern hip hop movement. Now 25 years old, Black earned his stripes both locally in his native Detroit and on a national level from his associations with Slum Village. He's also worked with major label artists like Pharoahe Monch, Kardinal Offishall, and Busta Rhymes and BLACK MILK proves on his new album, Tronic, that not only is he growing as an artist, but that hip hop music as a genre still has room to grow. ANNA LUNOE
ANNA LUNOE – a name that has since become synonymous with partying around the globe with her extensive knowledge of the latest genres to turn clubs into the sweaty messes. Lunoe‟s return to Australia could not have come at a better time with rumblings of Lunoe‟s prowess behind the mixer leading to a whole host of gigs in every capital city and damn near every venue across this brown wide land. BIG DAY OUT 2011 welcomes the arrival of ANNA LUNOE. (ALL AUSTRALIAN SHOWS)

Without further adieu, LILYWORLD 2011 are pleased to announce their national touring artists:
Hilarious, brilliant, unpredictable – comedian/musician REGGIE WATTS is a staple of the international performance scene. Reggie‟s improvised musical sets are created on-the-spot using only his formidable voice and a looping machine. No two songs are ever the same. An avowed "disinformationist," Reggie loves to disorientate his audiences in the most entertaining way. You may not know what Reggie is going to do, but that‟s okay – he doesn‟t either.
WUNMI became famous towards the end of the 80‟s with the British soul group, Soul II Soul, and then in the 90‟s with Masters At Work (MAW). Her explosive energy is the main characteristic of her performances. In the world of music, WUNMI is a one-off, an artist that effortlessly joins the dots between Nigeria‟s Youruba and Afrobeat heritage, New York‟s house pedigree and London‟s jazz, broken beat and classic street soul sounds. She has worked with artists of the likes of Roy Ayers, Fred Wesley, Pee Wee Ellis, Manu Dibango, Baaba Maal, Jocelyn Brown, Stephanie Mills, Tony Allen, Cheik Lo just to name a few.
RED BACTERIA VACUUM is a fast driving all-girl Japanese punk band from Osaka formed in 1998 and relocating to Tokyo in 2000. Their first EP Roller Coaster was released in January 2006. The band performed in US numerous times throughout the years, appearing at SXSW as well as participating in the Japan Nite in San Francisco. This will be their first tour of Australia. Kassan, Izumi and Jasmine promise to tear the Lilyworld apart with their high energy take no prisoners thrash J- punk style THE BALLOONATIC is the playful buffoon with a giant balloon. THE BALLOONATIC invites audiences to join in on a celebration of silliness, to reconnect with the kid inside and to PLAY! From Europe to Asia, Africa to Australia, he has left a wake of belly laughs across the globe. A combination of clowning, cartoon, circus skills and physical comedy, THE BALLOONATIC is a celebration of silliness. Playful, funny and unashamedly ridiculous, the act has left a wake of belly-laughs across the globe and appeals to all audiences. From European Festival to Australian cabaret stage, and from African village to global television audiences – the act has been seen on four continents. As THE BALLOONATIC says, “We don’t stop playing because we grow old, we grow old because we stop playing.”
THE UV RACE, of Melbourne, Australia, soak in the rays of the psychedelic and the proto-punk and the punk and the glam rock suns that orbits our earth and respond with the clang and drunk and mind melt that you'd expect from heatstroke and fried brain. Featuring world renowned idiot-savant Marcus on lead vocals: his poetic reduction of life's great mysteries into those questions that love and lust and longing provoke after a smile from a good looker. Somewhere between the Electric Eels and the Saints and Roxy Music and X and T-Rex and the Ramones is: THE UV RACE.
If you are a lowly peasant you want to turn your life around and become one of the plunders, you need to join the BARBARIÖN Horde! BARBARIÖN are powerful and fertile MEN. The BARBARIÖN stage show combines historically inaccurate, sexually ambiguous, highly flammable costumes with hastily assembled pyrotechnics in confined spaces, along with „carefully‟ choreographed guitar moves and plenty of exposed flesh. There is rarely a dull moment. Furthermore, BARBARIÖN's hold the mantle of the heaviest band in Melbourne with a combined weight of nearly 700kgs!
Melbourne‟s glamazons of dance and performance art V DENTATAS are back! Bringing epic dance moves, wild costumes and big hair to the Lilyworld stage for the third year in a row. These ladies of feathers, fur and spandex are known for their original choreography as for their epic and detailed costuming. V DENTATAS unique performance style cross references old school performance art, with mash ups of dance styles from jazz, African, hip hop to contemporary.
By now you should be really buzzing on our vibe and grooving with your head and your body to our far out scene. We are going to be laying it on you, man! So get involved tell your friends or maybe just have a way-out conversation with yourself just make the connection, right on. Make sure before you drop in to our happening that you read your horoscopes maybe compare the personalities of people born under the same sign or even under a different sign. JOY.

MUCKAMUCKS 2011
Where cutting edge international and local visual artists join forces with BIG DAY OUT to deliver a feast for your eyes and ears.
ARENA SCRIMS by DAVID GRIGGS
DAVID GRIGGS was born in a Lockheed Hercules somewhere above the north coast of Australia in 1975. At the age of 18 he worked for an underground newspaper, photographing poverty in North India and Nepal. In 1996, while travelling in China, he had a near death experience and has since been devoted to producing paintings that explore the darker side of humanity. Griggs has been working on and off in Manila, Philippines, for the past few years. Three of his recent exhibitions have directly related to his time spent in the Asian city. In his current work he crosses Catholic iconography with imagery from local Manila street gangs. Through the traditional mode of painting he negotiates large expressive marks detailing the territorial tattoos of the gangs. Griggs talks about tattooing as one of the simplest and exciting examples of fast communication. “With a simple drawing on flesh you can get information retelling a person‟s history, community, life, pain, love, faith, death and hope”.
CHANT DES SIRÈNES - France
Main Arena -10 minute performance between RAMMSTEIN and TOOL.
Four beautiful sets of Sirens will be located in the Main arena to produce glorious harmonic music created specifically for BIG DAY OUT. Performed live for the purpose of calming the crowd and clearing the ears.
What better way to calm the nerves between a German/US battle of titans than to have 10 minutes of soothing French sounds. (ALL AUSTRALIAN SHOWS)
CUBETRON – USA
This opto-kinetic sculpture by Mark Lottor features a computer controlled 3D array of thousands of colour changing lights that create spectacular dynamic effects – no glasses required. Its modular form allows various sizes and shapes to be constructed to fit the presentation environment.
CUBATRON will appear in the Boiler Room at all BIG DAY OUT shows. See www.cubatron.com for more info on the CUBATRON projects.
LORDS OF LIGHTNING – CARLOS VAN CAMP (NEW ZEALAND)
LIGHTNING FOR HIRE has been operating as a part time business out of New Zealand since 2000.
Fascinated by lightning from an early age Carlos Van Camp quickly became interested in the Tesla coil as a way of producing it. The Tesla coil was actually first invented over 100 years ago by a man named Nicola Tesla. Essentially a pulsed high frequency transformer, it uses the principle of resonance to achieve extremely high voltages. In the early days of experimenting in my garage, coils were made from junk parts.
The BIG DAY OUT has previously seen the Lightning Rider show, with a single Tesla coil and a performer wearing a protective metal suit throwing the bolts around from his hands and head. This time around the LORDS OF LIGHTNING will be battling it out in your face as they perform in a more intense environment, the Boiler Room ...
LORDS OF LIGHTNING will appear at all Australian BIG DAY OUT shows. See http://www.lightningforhire.co.nz/ for more info.
