Bacardi Express 2010: CASSETTE KIDS

Print
So you’ve managed to score yourself a spot on the BACARDI EXPRESS, what do you think will be the highlight of the tour?
Probably just being able to hang out with all the other bands on the tour under such unique circumstances. We've toured with Yves Klein Blue before so that will be great to catch up with them, and we met Miami Horror recently. Top guys all of them!

How do you feel about going on tour with UK superstar La Roux?
Excellent. We were vying for a support slot with her a while back but didn't get the opportunity. Now we can cross that one off the list! It's nice to have another girl on board too. Last year was a bit of a sausage party wasn't it?

How would you describe your band’s live performance style?
We're quite energetic. Techno Dan has some fabulous if not groundbreaking dance moves. We just want people to have a good time at our shows. We keep it fairly up-tempo and give it everything! Jake (drummer) nearly threw up on stage at Pyramid Rock. He's that hardcore.

If Coffs Harbour is famous for The Big Banana, and Newcastle is all about heavy metal what is your bands mascot/motto?
Oh gee um... 'Even when the drum kit is falling off the drum rise, you've broken 3 guitar strings and been smashed in the face with a bass.... JUST KEEP GOING!'

Which city on the tour are you looking forward to visiting? Why?
Brisbane because every time we play there crazy shit happens. The kids are mental in the best way possible. They express themselves and always have a good time!

Do you find the regional crowds much different from the big city crowds?
When you play regional places it gets a whole lot more intimate. I find that people come say hi and are very sweet and genuine. It's nice to meet kids from regional places because they are very appreciative. Unless you're in Frankston, in which case you may receive an enthusiastic punch in the face.

How does the band prepare for a show?
We try to get a set list going about an hour before we play. Big Dan writes it out for us because he has the best handwriting. Obviously before a tour we'll get in the rehearsal space for a good chunk of time and make sure everything’s sounding tight! We've got a brand new album of songs to play so the rehearsals are pretty valuable!

In your opinion, what makes a tour great?
For the crowd, having an interesting mix of acts to watch that are captivating and passionate. For the band, the overall experience from the food you eat, to the travelling, to the place you fall asleep. Playing great shows helps but so does having awesome people around you with a sense of humour! If all that stuff sucks then a good responsive crowd will always lift your spirits!

Who is your favourite live performer and why? Where did you see them play?
Recently I saw Animal Collective at the Enmore. The show was incredible from lighting, sound, and stage design. As performers they are a little more subtle, but captivating all the same.

If you could go to any concert in the history of the world, whose concert would you go see?
Pink Floyd. From all documentation, their show looked overwhelmingly incredible.

How do you feel about spending 48 hours with other bands, fans and media on a train?
Great! We're a fairly social bunch so we enjoy meeting new people and making the most of the tour!

Your top ten iPod songs? Any recommendations?
  1. The xx - Crystalised
  2. Metronomy - Radio Ladio
  3. Simian Mobile Disco - Audacity of Huge
  4. Crystal Castles - Courtship Dating
  5. Late of the Pier -  The Bears are Coming
  6. Neon Indian - Deadbeat Summer
  7. Grizzly Bear - While you Wait for the Others
  8. Animal Collective - My Girls
  9. The Golden Filter - Thunderbird
  10. Girls - Lust For Life
  Best travelling songs?
On the road we've been listening to the new Editors album when we feel serious, Calvin Harris when we want to party, and the xx when we want to chill out.

If you were booking the Bacardi festival Express for next year, give us your dream line-up (dead or alive)?
  Pink Floyd
Bjork
Bat For Lashes
...and Cassette Kids…

48 hrs on your own party train – who / what gets an invite?
There would be a carriage full of puppies and a carriage full of the cast from The Mighty Boosh to make us laugh, and a carriage full of legendary musicians willing to collaborate.

If you could create a cocktail and name it, what would it contain and what would you call it?
Bacardi, coconut, ice cream, crushed biscuits. I would call it 'The Rum Ball Smoothie'.

What’s next for the band after BACARDI EXPRESS?
We head off to Texas for SXSW, and we'll be super busy touring our debut album 'Nothing on TV' here and O/S!
